The $300 check given to the Pittsburgh Dream Center in McKeesport by Uforia owner Kathy Safchick, will provide funds for the “Backback Meals” program for one weekend.
The Dream center staff was alerted by a McKeesport school nurse that there are children who come to school on Mondays with their stomachs growling from hunger. The subsidized meal program in public schools provide breakfast and lunch five days a week, but weekends can be a problem. In many situations food stamps are sold for drug money and the children go without. The Pgh Dream Center provides backpacks filled with non-perishable food items that do not need a stove. Canned hot dogs and beans, dried fruit, mac and cheese, sliced carrots and things young children can simply open and eat. Forty children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade are currently getting this assistance.
