Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take walk-ins?
We do take walk-ins and we welcome new faces. However, we do try our best to provide a professional service to all of our clients and that is almost impossible when the visit is unexpected. You want the best service possible and sometimes that means scheduling a specific time so that we can give you a great experience.
Do you offer a Girls-Day-Out Package?
We can customize any services to suit your preferences. Simply call our salon coordinator at 412-856-4712 and speak to Chris or Daron and they will help create a special time for you and your friends.
My hair is ruined from blow-drying and flat-ironing. What is the best hair care regime to repair it?
Thermal abuse is a common problem. Depending on your hair, whether it be very curly or rather straight, we advise not using the flat iron everyday. We also suggest using a thermal protectant serum before blow drying. This provides a cushion barrier between the extreme heat of a flat iron and your hair. We also suggest using a conditioning treatment every shampoo and try your best not to overwork your hair with chemical services that put a strain on the condition of the hair cuticle. Use a flatiron with ceramic plates instead of metal plates and with a temperature control option. Give your hair a rest periodically and just wrap it in a towel with a deep conditioning treatment. It might not hurt to leave a little bit of conditioner on your ends before blow drying and try to avoid using products that stiffen the texture of your hair such as heavy styling gels and foams. Think soft and gentle.
I have been losing a lot of hair. What can I do to make my hair soft and more manageable?
There are many reasons for thinning hair. It is normal to lose 150 to 200 hairs everyday especially if your hair is very long. Long hair has been around a long time and needs to shed. But if it is much more than that, it could be internal. We suggest you review your medications if any. Blood pressure, heart, thyroid, and hormone replacement drugs are just a few that can cause problems with hair. Stress, change in diet, losing weight, or a food allergy can also be a problem. If the frizz is just on the ends it is possible the hair simply needs a good trim. We also suggest that the products used in styling are not stiffening in any way. Styling creams, pomades or leave-in-conditioners are a nice alternative; also a super charged conditioner or Super Skinny by Pail Mitchell.
Can you help me find the best haircut for me? I really need to find a haircut that suits me. I want someone to listen to me. Do you take time for consultations or do you just start cutting?
So many people feel like you do and it really deters many from visiting salons. We pride ourselves in the ability to dig deep into prospective clients' past hair history, for what worked in the past and what hair problems they are currently experiencing. If you come to Uforia, we would sit down and discuss with you all the possibilities, and we would go over a myriad of different styling books. We especially welcome pictures you have gathered from magazines or the Internet. Our shears would not be touched until we have a definite plan in mind even if it takes several consultation visits. Which by the way are free. I hope this boosts your confidence in our dedication to pleasing our clients.
What can you do about cellulite? How can you make it less pronounced?
Try our Seaphisticated Cellulite Treatment. The benefits of this treatment are as follows. It is anti-inflammatory, it stimulates metabolism, regulates the water balance between minerals and trace elements, has a smoothing effect, and hydrates. Massage is also helpful in breaking down muscle tension and stimulating circulation.
How can pedicures reduce and prevent cracked heels?
The skin of the feet takes a lot of abuse from being locked into shoes and boots most of the time. Dead skin builds up almost like a callus. A good soaking in a pedibath with lots of soothing additives can soften the dead skin enough to be removed with a pumice stone. It is important to moisturize feet as much as the hands or face. Feet carry you through life and are worth the effort and extra attention. A pedicure every month or so is a great treat.
My eyes are tired and puffy in the morning. What can I do to get rid of this quickly?
Lymphatic drainage massage has an immediate effect on fluid retention anywhere in the body. For the eyes, you would receive a lymphatic drainage treatment which uses specific techniques to move lymph through the drainage pathways of the neck and face, then stimulate lymph flow in the area around the eyes. You can expect to see noticeable effects in the course of one treatment.
Can you help the appearance of my nails and cuticles without using gels?
We suggest that you rub heated olive oil into your cuticles and nails every evening before bedtime. A regular manicure is very helpful in maintaining healthy nails.
What are the health benefits of massage?
Controlled research studies over the past twenty years have demonstrated significant healing effects of a variety of massage and energy healing modalities. In general, massage and other energy healing work tends to reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, relieve headaches and other painful conditions, release muscle tension, stimulate circulation, and boost the immune system. A three-year study with over 1200 cancer patients at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York demonstrated a mean 53% reduction in pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and nausea for patients receiving massage along with chemotherapy.
What are the risks associated with massage?
For a healthy individual, there is no risk associated with massage that is performed competently and with sensitivity. Professional massage therapists are knowledgeable about contraindications for massage for specific disease conditions, so it is important to tell your massage therapist about any injuries, recent surgeries, illnesses, and medications that you may be taking. The therapist will modify the treatment based on your condition. It is also important for you to speak up and let the therapist know if any of the work feels uncomfortable to you, in order to prevent injury during a massage session.
Do you use products that do not contain nut/seed products? Are they hypo-allergic?
Our massage cream contains canola oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, avocado oil, sesame oil jojoba oil, aloe vera extract, calendula oil, vitamin E, Japanese green tea and ginger root extract. It is hypo-allergic and so far clients have not had problems with either the cream or the gel that contains sunflower oil, sesame seed, aloe vera, safflower seed, or avocado oil.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is one of the many energy healing treatments in which the therapist channels healing energy into the body to normalize energy flow, which affects all functionality of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. A Reiki session is done with the client fully clothed.   The therapist may or may not be touching the body, and all touch is gentle and comforting.
Why is it important to drink water after a massage?
Water is life! Some massage therapists like to say that water helps to flush toxins released via massage, but there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Generally speaking, massage helps to move everything in the body toward a state of balance, and sufficient hydration (immediately after a massage or anytime) helps to sustain healing processes.
